2018 Summer

Continuing with allergy shots, Avamys and Claritin. The doctor gave me a prescription for Rupall this summer as well and it was OK, no side-effects.

I still have a prescription for the inhaler (SALBUTAMOL SULPHATE: APO-SALVENT CFC FREE INH 100UG) but used it only twice so far in 2018.

Allergy Shots Update

Back in January 2010 I signed up for six Allergy shots, one per week, to get my immune system ready for the season. Spring 2010 was much better than the previous year. I think the shots had a lot to do with that.

I wanted to be sure the difference was because of the shots so I decided to skip January 2011 and did not get them. That was a bad decision. My allergies were so bad that I had to get a inhaler, SALBUTAMOL SULPHATE: APO-SALVENT CFC FREE INH 100UG

This past Tuesday, April 17th 2012, was my sixth and last "pre-season trees and grass" allergy shot. The doc told me that I can get two more if I want but the sixth shot was the biggest dose they give to patients and seventh and eighth shot would be the same dose. I'm not going for the 6th and 7th because this last shot has been difficult to deal with. My elbow has been red, itchy and swollen for more than two days and it's quite painful. Here's to hoping Summer/Spring 2012 will be manageable and much better than Summer/Spring 2011.

During my annual health checkup I asked my family doctor if I can start the allergy shots again to try and get a better handle on my allergic reactions every summer. Maybe its just mu imagination but it seems I feel worse every year.

Dr. Saha referred me to Dr. Babu and today I had an allergy test. The last one I had was in 1997 so Dr. Babu wanted to do another test to see if my allergies have changed.

They haven't changed much but I got more detailed info this time. I am still allergic to grass, moss, weeds, pollen, trees, etc. but Birch trees affect me the most. Apparently I am slightly allergic to cats although I've never noticed it. The other items such as dust, mites, etc were in the results as well.

Dr. Babu recommended a seasonal instead of a year-long process. I will now get six shots, one per week, starting in January 2010. These six shots will concentrated enough to help me get through the entire spring and summer season.

Let's hope they work!

In the meantime, Nasonex and Claritin are my best friends.

Hello 2009! Sunday, April 19th, was the first horrible allergy-day of the year. I barely slept because of blocked and inflamed sinuses which make it very hard to breathe properly. This year I'm trying out a new nasal spray called Hydrasense. So far it's worked pretty well.. clears out the blockage almost instantly for a few hours. I've started the Claritin routine as well. I have an appointment with my doctor on May 1st and I'm planning on asking him if I can re-start the allergy shots treatment. I used to get weekly shots back in 1998 and then stopped after 3 years. Now that I have a car, I don't have to take public transit anymore so going to the clinic every week wouldn't be such a hassle.

Cheers to all fellow seasonal allergy sufferers. Hello to Spring!

It's been two years since my nasal turbinates surgery. There isn't any significant improvement. Nasal passages are inflamed and leaking as usual. It's mid-June now so only the grass allergies are affecting me.

The Ragweed pollen starts spreading from around mid-July to early October. Not looking forward to that. I have an appointment with the local doctor next week. I'll get a prescription for the Nasonex nasal drops. It helped me immensely last year and I found it much better than Flonase.

i had another ENT appointment on 9th january 2006. this doctor, a doctor Beard, has a beard and was a thousand fold better than the last ENT i saw in Ottawa. he injected some solution into my nose ( oww oww ) and then nasally probed me and spent what seemed like an eternity looking at the insides of my nose. what can possibly be so exciting in there ?

it turns out my nose is unusual. i already knew that. the nasal turbinates inside my nose are inflamed which leads to trouble in breathing which leads to shortness of breath which leads to not enough oxygen in my lungs which leads to an overall tiredness. and don't forget the horrible snoring :(

but what is unusual is that usually the front of the turbinates get inflamed. in my case it is the back of the turbinates.. further inside the huge nasal cavity. also my right nostril is smaller than the left nostril so when the turbinates move around, as they do occassionally blocking one of the two nostrils, i have more trouble breathing if the left nostril is blocked.

the diagnosis was that i need surgery and i am scheduled for surgery on march 30th 2006 under general anesthesia.. meaning i'll be sleeping which they cut stuff. scary !

but hopefully it will be for the better and my allergies and nasal problems will be less intrusive during summer of 2006

the EarNoseThroat doctor appointment is on august 20th 2002. that is the earliest appointment they could find. i need one now so he can see whats wrong while its wrong. not when everything is settling down and allergies are gone. canada needs to revamp its health sector. gah.. me angry

a perfect day today. no symptoms at all. i happy.

the eye is a bit red and itchy though. but the anti-histamine eye-drops (which sting really bad) took care of that.

Monday, June 17, 2002

no sneezes and headaches today. but a runny nose that is still running :-/ i just took a Claritin tablet so hopefully that'll fix this up. enough!! its 2pm already.

also, administering eye drops to your own eye is quite challenging.

it seems that the enemy has decided to lie dormant for a while. perhaps charania's defense system came as a surprise to them and they were caught unprepared for it. hopefully they won't be able to develop an immunity to the spray and their troops will loose morale and decide that it is, after all, a pointless battle. come september and they won't find a friend anywhere in the nasal cavities.

today = no headaches, no sneezes (oh heaven!!), and no runny nose either. i didn't even have to take a Claritin tablet.

I should've started this a while ago but procrastination reared its ugly head once again and so here i am a week after this current allergy attack started. the main reason for this is to remind myself that i go thru this insanity every year. around september, when school starts, the allergies go away and i become a happy man again loving nature and all that. and from september all the way to around mid may the allergies stay hidden and do not disturb me. during this glorious time period i forget the pangs and sorrows of being allergic to almost eveything green, living, and holding a valid Plant Kingdom Membership Card. so when dr. charania asked me if this happened every year or are there some specific months when they act up i was at a loss and could only reply, "yes they start sometime around these months" <-- dumb dumb. and hence the reason for this higly informative webpage on the world wide web. here goes :

for the past five or six days i have been waking up with a horrible headache, an endless chain of sneezing, which pops the ears sometimes, a stuffy, blocked, and runny nose, and ears that need to be popped open asap. trust me it is no fun. today was almost the same. when i woke up there was no headache, no runny nose, no dry throat (cuz of blocked nose at night), and no sneezing. i was ecstatic for a moment thinking that dr. charania's two-sprays-everynight-before-bedtime worked wonders on my system. however, once i was downstairs making me some noodles for breakfast the membranes in the nasal cavity unleashed one of their worst attacks in recent history. i had to run upstairs to get some tissues to keep myself decent. and now here i am with noodles and hot chocolate on one side and a bunch of tissues on the other. happy summer to you too!!
